Matka Canyon

West of the city centre of Skopje, North Macedonia's Matka Canyon may be found. The oldest man-made lake in the nation is located in the Matka Canyon and is named Matka Lake.

Matka, also known as Kanioni I Matks, is a canyon west of the centre of Skopje, North Macedonia. Its name means "womb" in Macedonian and "womb" in Albanian. One of North Macedonia's most popular outdoor locations and the site of several mediaeval monasteries, Matka is a region of about 5,000 hectares. The oldest man-made lake in the nation is located in the Matka Canyon and is named Matka Lake.

Geology

At Matka Canyon, there are eleven caverns, the least measuring 20 metres (65.6 feet) and the longest 176 metres (577.4 feet). The canyon also has two vertical pits, each of which is approximately 35 metres (114.8 feet) deep.

Cave of Vrelo

The New7Wonders of Nature project is named Vrelo Cave, which is situated on the right bank of the Treska River, is one of the top 77 natural places in the world.

Numerous stalactites can be found at Vrelo Cave, including a sizable one in the centre that is known as the "Pine Cone" because of its shape. At the end of the cave, there are two lakes, one of which is larger than the other. The smaller lake's largest length is 8 metres (26.2 ft).

Biology

Many different types of plants and animals, some of which are local to the area, can be found at Matka Canyon. About 20% of the plants in Matka are endemic, or unique to this place. Additionally, there are 77 native butterfly species that live in the canyon. The horned viper, south Europe's most poisonous snake, is also found in the canyon. A significant number of bat populations live in the canyon's caves.

Attractions

In large part because of its proximity to Skopje, Matka Canyon is a well-liked tourist and local attraction. One of the best places in North Macedonia for alpine hiking is the canyon. Around Easter, the climbing season starts, and it lasts until November. Kayaking on the Treska River is a popular activity, as are fishing, hunting, and swimming.
